Harold B. "Bill" Helwig

Born in Wellington, Kansas, in 1938, Bill Helwig’s early years were shaped by his grandparents’ encouragement to explore a variety of interests. In 1956, he enrolled in a Pre-Med program but found his true calling in art two years later. Initially focusing on watercolor, his path shifted again in 1959 when he discovered enameling while assisting a classmate with her master’s thesis exhibition.

Helwig taught himself the art of enameling through experimentation, guided by Kenneth Bates classic book Enameling Principles and Practice. This marked the beginning of his lifelong dedication to exploring and innovating within the medium.

Over the decades, Helwig created an impressive body of work, with many pieces now held in prestigious institutions, including the Smithsonian, as well as in private collections. His contributions to enameling reflect a deep understanding of the craft and a fearless drive for experimentation.

The Vitreous Vault is honored to present a curated selection of exquisite works from the Helwig Estate. These pieces, imbued with Helwig’s mastery and vision, are now available to 21st-century collectors. We’re confident you’ll find them as inspiring and captivating as we do.
